Gut Check ~ Check
Reality Check ~ Check, as well, as the East Prairie Eagles (3-0) and the Scott City Rams (2-1) slugged it out Friday Night at William Wilthong Field.
It was ~ in the end ~ a thrilling 40-34 overtime decision won by the Eagles on the strength and savvy play all night of Senior Quarterback Shelby Ellis. His 22-yard dash on the first play of OT was the Game Winner.
Ep missed the opportunity for the 8-point margin as the 2-point pass play fell through the hands of a wide-open receiver in the end-zone.
On their possession, Scott City ~ which it had done all night ~ began moving the ball. On 3rd down ~ however ~ a bad snap forced the Rams into a long 4th down and the Eagles survived ~ again.
It shouldn’t have come to this ~ as both teams ~ failed to fully capitalize at crucial times in the game.
None more so than Scott City failing to score the winning TD in regulation. The Rams ran out of time and the Eagles held on the 2-yard Line as the clock ran out.
East Prairie ~ as they did in 2014 ~ grabbed a lead and throttled it back seemingly only to have the Rams charge back in the second half and control the game. It was the first time the Eagles first team defense had been scored on this season and it was the first time Ep had trailed.
And, without the clutch play of the Line ~ Offensive and Defense ~ the Eagles would not have been able to put 40 on the board. It was, however, extremely hot and muggy, and although no cramping during the game the pace of action ~ tepid to begin ~ gradually slowed as the evening wore on.
It was A Festive Visiting Atmosphere at Wilthong.
#EpEagle Fans are excited about the opportunity to greet the Eagle’s at The Nest Friday as the (2-1) Hayti Indians come to town with loads of talent and a chip on the shoulder.
East Prairie (3-0) needs the A Game to Show.
