…”Music holds the Secret; to know it can make Your Soul whole…So Live for the Common Man and the People In Despair”~ Rik Emmit
As a disc-jockey who actually played 45 rpms as a paying gig…all with that chore comes the joy of having access to a wall of music since 16.
The 16-18 minute commercial staple quarter hour set was a fundamental to Barney’s eclectic brilliant Radio management back the days when KYMO topped the charts; and the media books, thus allowing access to Sikeston advertisers on the Prairie. And, he shard – with me – connections and opportunities I’ve never reciprocated in scale.
Not that I wished not to; He explained to me one Sunday afternoon while we had the doors wide open; Sound swooping through the Studio; He with his classic off-chart Beatle tune; me~ firing off something raucous 70’s Honk; and, we would do this most weekends – even while Tom was still with us. He tho, on weekend he relented a tag and got in the Jam Sessions some time.
I explored the Wall of Music Albums in possession of KYMO. I so hope they have been cared for. One of the Largest Hippest Album Libray I’ve seen. From KGMO to Y103 in Jonesboro and would likely rival Memphis stastions, too.
But, BW was a stickler for details. And, for maximizing advertisers ROI. He taught me that; forced me to learn that when selling and I hold true to that merit today. Since beginning the #Kron, I have ambled back to folks I’ve sold ads to for 30 years. The reception has been overwhelmingly positive. And, I thank them Each and every one of you ~and you know who you are. Thank You.
All other times – M- F – it was a rigidly strict 3-song set; 4 30 sec commercials and over and over again. !That was a staple of Kymo’s Top 40 Rock and Roll format. It, sadly was altered a tad when I hit the mike. Especially, the long hung-over weekend sessions. But I digress Lee Powers.
Ep was exposed to a lot back in the day. As time passed on and my breadth and knowledge grew; merging with the KRCU playlist with KYUMO’s and it was hit with all the young hip people.
Since then it has been one fine ride through the galaxy. Regrets, I have a few. But I’ll critically think those in true Southern ole fashion Scarlet form line.
#FreeThinking – This has been a kinda guiding song of mine for a long time. #CarryOnWaywardSon
…”Quibble if you will…” But, the Kansas tune rang true to me growing up on the Prairie.
Which gave birth to the KpKronicle. My experiences – all of them; good, bad and ugly – have molded my meaning and thinking and for that I am grateful, thankful and blessed.
The Kron will take the form of independent thinkin in terms of writin; postin and criticism…heavy emphasis on Twain principle of language, sans the pretentiousness.
Weaving a ‘triecta’ of tune with meaning was always the attention while on duty. Thus, cue up a second helpin of Kansas. And, Kansas became a spiritual and religious band after their crazy run in the 70’s. Listening to their lyrics one can sense they have always been on a Karma Kosmic Spiritual journey in their Lives.
Thus, the tune, Dust in the Wind.
There is a version of this with a Coronet opening when the Eagles played Melbourne in 2005 is amazing. Hell had thawed and Australia beckoned…#HotelCalifornia…I told ya.
Music was so much better in the 70’s…:)…just was!
As Robert Plant echoes in the beginning of this version of Led Zeppellin’s Stairway to Heaven.
…and Pray is done in equal amounts…at this point in my Life. Some of inquired as to why I have embarked upon this Journey. #TheKron
I have no simple answers. The fundamental one that come quickly to mind is food; hunger; Kids need shoes; That kind of stuff, ya know.
Moreover, I have spent the past 3-decade working in Media; from radio; newspapers to TV; I’ve done it all. Delivered; reported it on it. Sold it. Read it. Bled It. Lived and Died with it. And, still do. Apparently I always will. That’s a Good Thing.
And, can I get an AMEN…
